You're a team of astronauts sent to a station called The Library, on a discovery expedition. The station used to be an archive, an off world site to house copies of all humanities knowledge. The station has long gone dark, No one has heard from the residents in ages. Your mission is to figure out what happened, and uncover the secrets of The Library along the way.
The game is played in four stages, creating a log of your team's mission to The Library. In each stage, you explore one of six possible locations in the station, with the aim to figure out what happened to the station's previous inhabitants.
Each player has their own goal in the library, secret from the rest of the players. A player may seek to find fame and fortune in the books within. Or maybe they wish to learn the ultimate secret of the universe. An infinite amount of knowledge is contained in the library, if you're willing to put the effort in to find it.
Played with a standard deck of playing cards, each player is assigned a suit which determines just what they're looking for in the library: fame, knowledge, power, or love.
Players take turns drawing and playing cards which correspond to prompts in the playbook- these are actions they can take, knowledge they can gain, or threats they may encounter in the library. Each player is working to collect cards of their suit- or find the king of their suit- to complete their personal quest in the library.
Station IV is a collaborative storytelling game about exploring an ancient library set in the endless darkness of space. It is inspired by the short story The Library of Babel by Jorge Luis Borges, and seeks to create a story generating tool as well as a hidden role game experience.
Will you work together with your teammates, or will you betray them on your quest for the secrets of The Library?
